Intro to Service Learning

I have chosen to do my service learning at South Jordan Elementary. I went to this elementary school for all of my elementary years, as did both of my younger siblings. This school is the reason I have always wanted to be a teacher. I love this school because of the faculty and everything they have helped me accomplish. In my opinion, South Jordan Elementary school is a very nice school. It is clean, in a good location, and is full of great people. The surrounding neighborhoods are generally very nice, the houses are nice and well taken care of. By looking at the surrounding neighborhood, I do not expect that there are a lot of families in poverty. 

This being a very well developed area, I think I will be working with bright, healthy, and happy kids. I have been to different classroom activities and assemblies in the past few years and have had the chance to watch the kids. I notice that they are all mostly happy and they seem smart and healthy. 


Service learning is a way to get in the classroom and observe real teachers and possibly help them teach or do ‘teacher stuff’. I think service learning is a way to ‘get your hands dirty’ and experience what it really is like to be a teacher. I think through service learning you can learn more about yourself and how you want to teach. I am super excited to start my service learning and find out more about what teachings all about!

Final Reflection

One of my favorite things about the service learning assignment was making connections between what I was observing and what I was learning. One of my favorite things we learning about in this course was how to engage students. I did most of my service learning in a first grade classroom, and first grade students need a lot of engaging! It was fun to see the different ways to engage learners that we talked about in class, in my service learning! Learning Theories in the Classroom

For my first service learning experience, I observed in the 1st grade classroom of the teacher I had when I was in 2nd grade. I was excited to see if I could notice changes in how she teaches now and how she taught me. Sadly, I don't remember much about how she taught me :)  When I got there, the kids were all working on their math assignment. About 30 minutes later was recess. The learning theory I observed most was behaviorism. If the students didn't finish their math before recess, they had to stay in and work on it. If they finished their math before recess, they could choose a math game to play until recess. This demonstrates behaviorism because the behavior of the students (whether or not they finish their math assignment) is shaped by the reward (going out to recess and playing math-related games) or the consequence (staying inside for recess). Every Star is Different

In the 1st grade classroom I have been observing, it is obvious that there is a lot of students with different needs. The teacher has even said that this class has been one of the most difficult classes for her because of all the needs of specific students. Usually when I am able to go to the classroom it is during math. So I usually sit at the back table and help some of the students with math. There are some students who know exactly what to do and how to do it, they just need help focusing. There are some students who just don't get math. The teacher has had to change some of the curriculum for certain students because they were getting so far behind.
